How has technology influenced my understanding of personal identity / how I see myself?
Taking into consideration all social media platforms, and understanding they have had a huge role in how I see myself. As a 17 year old girl, who grew up in a time where Snapchat, instagram, and tik tok blew up, throught the years I’ve learned to Navigate between them figuring out who I am. I post small pieces of my life, which even then I’m cautious of, I like many other people would never post something that makes me look bad, or something controversial. Which just isn’t reality. Sometimes I even catch myself comparing my posts to others, these apps influence how I think about myself. On the flip side the social media i interact with helps inspire ideas, build confidence and lets me connect online showing my family and friends the new things I’m doing. According to the 2025 News-port academy article “how does social media effect teenagers”, Teens who compare to social media report to have lower self esteem, self evaluation and peer pressure to look and act a certain way. I however grew up in a family who teaches me from the start everything you see is either edited or it is the camera angles (even Snapchat filters alter your identity), however there are many teenagers with parents who are oblivious to teach this to their kids at a young age which Leads to teenagers having a false sense of identity and reality.
